FILM SYNOPSIS

This is the story of Oscar Arias, former President of Costa Rica and 1987 Nobel Peace Prize winner. This documentary takes you through his early life up to his presidency and takes you into detail on his quest to end military conflict. The story focuses on his life and intertwining details related to historical events both in Central America and around the globe. It also delves into Arias’ efforts to create a peace plan to stop the fighting between the Sandinista government and the Contra rebels in Nicaragua during the 1980s, and also touches upon Arias’ quest in the 21st century to create a new international treaty for arms control. This effort was aimed to stop the sales of weapons to developing nations by the world powers.

“Mine is an unarmed people, whose children have never seen a fighter or a tank or a warship. Our experience shows that security does not lie in weapons or fences or armies. More combat planes, missiles and soldiers won’t provide additional bread for our families, desks for our schools or medicine for our clinics.”
